Halloween Party 2011
Saturday, October 29, 2011, ATA Martial Arts hosted their annual Halloween Party. Unfortunately the Trunk or Treat portion had to be cancelled due to snow (can you belive it!?!) but the party inside was spooktacular. Students were treated to a tour of the zombie infested haunted ATA school. The tour included a tour of the medical treatment center, the zombie lab, games such as musical chairs, relay races, and the limbo. There was also Halloween safety tips and a costume parade. To top it all off, students were able to watch the zombie demo team perform their glow in the dark special demonstration. Thank you to everyone who came to make it a successful night. Check out the fantastically awesome demo below. Great job demo team!

On a great summer night after classes, ATA Martial Arts hosted their ice cream party. Mr. and Mrs. Jouan provided the ice cream and everyone that came brought a topping to share. Mr. and Mrs. Jouan's New Ranks
Mr. and Mrs. Jouan went to test for new belts at 2010 World Championships in Little Rock, Arkansas on June 24th. Well, the results are in! Mr. Jouan got a call personally from Chief Master Dilegge to congratulate him on being a brand new 6th degree black belt and Master's Candidate. Mrs. Jouan got a call later that evening from her instructor, Master Stewart, confirming that she passed and is now a 5th degree.
Mr. and Mrs. Jouan plan to have their new ranks presented to them by the special guest at testing in August.
The next step for Mr. Jouan after that is to undergo vigorous physical and mental training over the next year. If all requirements are met, at 2012 World Championships, Mr. Jouan will go through hardcore training and go from Master's Candidate to Master Nominee. If everything goes well, he will then be inaugurated at 2012 World Championships opening ceremonies as a Master Instructor.
Thank you to all ATA West Chester students, friends, and family for all of the support and encouragement. Congratulations also to the other testers at Worlds 2010 on successful midterms and also passing and receiving their new ranks.

Belt Promotions June 2011 and Combat Bahng Mahng Ee
June 17th and 18th ATA Martial Arts of West Chester held their belt promotions. Students tested for ranks from orange to 1st Degree Decided Black Belt. In addition, many Black Belt students mid term tested at the 1st and 2nd Degree Black Belt ranks. Also, Mr. and Mrs. Jouan did an exhibition testing for all the students to see what they would have to do the following week at World Championships. Special guest instructor, Senior Master Raimondi enjoyed overseeing black belt testing. He then stayed to teach the first ever Combat Bahng Mahng Ee training seminar at ATA West Chester. Brown belts and above worked on combat drills and enjoyed doing some rounds of weapons combat sparring.

Habits of Successful People
Mrs. J has been doing some fun reading this weekend and wanted to share this with everyone. Lifestyle magazine had published "50 Habits of Successful People." Enjoy!
Habits of successful people….
1. They look for and find opportunities where others see nothing.
2. They find a lesson while others only see a problem.
3. They are solution focused.
4. They consciously and methodically create their own success, while others hope success will find them.
5. They are fearful like everyone else, but they are not controlled or limited by fear.
6. They ask the right questions – the ones which put them in a productive, creative, positive mindset and emotional state.
7. They rarely complain (waste of energy). All complaining does is put the complainer in a negative and unproductive state.
8. They don’t blame (what’s the point?). They take complete responsibility for their actions and outcomes (or lack thereof).
9. While they are not necessarily more talented than the majority, they always find a way to maximize their potential. They get more out of themselves. They use what they have more effectively.
10. They are busy, productive and proactive. While most are laying on the couch, planning, over-thinking, sitting on their hands and generally going around in circles, they are out there getting the job done.
11. They align themselves with like-minded people. They understand the importance of being part of a team. They create win-win relationships.
12. They are ambitious; they want amazing – and why shouldn’t they? They consciously choose to live their best life rather than spending it on auto-pilot.
13. They have clarity and certainty about what they want (and don’t want) for their life. They actually visualize and plan their best reality while others are merely spectators of life.
14. They innovate rather than imitate.
15. They don’t procrastinate and they don’t spend their life waiting for the ‘right time’.
16. They are life-long learners. They constantly work at educating themselves, either formally (academically), informally (watching, listening, asking, reading, student of life) or experientially (doing, trying)… or all three.
17. They are glass half full people – while still being practical and down-to-earth. They have an ability to find the good.
18. They consistently do what they need to do, irrespective of how they are feeling on a given day. They don’t spend their life stopping and starting.
19. They take calculated risks – financial, emotional, professional, psychological.
20. They deal with problems and challenges quickly and effectively, they don’t put their head in the sand. They face their challenges and use them to improve themselves.
21. They don’t believe in, or wait for fate, destiny, chance or luck to determine or shape their future. They believe in, and are committed to actively and consciously creating their own best life.
22. While many people are reactive, they are proactive. They take action before they have to.
23. They are more effective than most at managing their emotions. They feel like we all do but they are not slaves to their emotions.
24. They are good communicators and they consciously work at it.
25. They have a plan for their life and they work methodically at turning that plan into a reality. Their life is not a clumsy series of unplanned events and outcomes.
26. Their desire to be exceptional means that they typically do things that most won’t. They become exceptional by choice. We’re all faced with live-shaping decisions almost daily. Successful people make the decisions that most won’t and don’t.
27. While many people are pleasure junkies and avoid pain and discomfort at all costs, successful people understand the value and benefits of working through the tough stuff that most would avoid.
28. They have identified their core values (what is important to them) and they do their best to live a life which is reflective of those values.
29. They have balance. While they may be financially successful, they know that the terms money and success are not interchangeable. They understand that people who are successful on a financial level only, are not successful at all. Unfortunately we live in a society which teaches that money equals success. Like many other things, money is a tool. It’s certainly not a bad thing but ultimately, it’s just another resource.
30. They understand the importance of discipline and self-control. They are strong. They are happy to take the road less traveled.
31. They are secure. They do not derive their sense of worth of self from what they own, who they know, where they live or what they look like.
32. They are generous and kind. They take pleasure in helping others achieve.
33. They are humble and they are happy to admit mistakes and to apologise. They are confident in their ability, but not arrogant. They are happy to learn from others. They are happy to make others look good rather than seek their own personal glory.
34. They are adaptable and embrace change, while the majority are creatures of comfort and habit. They are comfortable with, and embrace, the new and the unfamiliar.
35. They keep themselves in shape physically, not to be mistaken with training for the Olympics or being obsessed with their body. They understand the importance of being physically well. They are not all about looks, they are more concerned with function and health. Their body is not who they are, it’s where they live.
36. They have a big engine. They work hard and are not lazy.
37. They are resilient. When most would throw in the towel, they’re just warming up.
38. They are open to, and more likely to act upon, feedback.
39. They don’t hang out with toxic people.
40. They don’t invest time or emotional energy into things which they have no control of.
41. They are happy to swim against the tide, to do what most won’t. They are not people pleasers and they don’t need constant approval.
42. They are more comfortable with their own company than most.
43. They set higher standards for themselves (a choice we can all make), which in turn produces greater commitment, more momentum, a better work ethic and of course, better results.
44. They don’t rationalize failure. While many are talking about their age, their sore back, their lack of time, their poor genetics, their ‘bad luck’, their nasty boss and their lack of opportunities (all good reasons to fail), they are finding a way to succeed despite all their challenges.
45. They have an off switch. They know how to relax, enjoy what they have in their life and to have fun.
46. Their career is not their identity, it’s their job. It’s not who they are, it’s what they do.
47. They are more interested in effective than they are in easy. While the majority look for the quickest, easiest way (the shortcut), they look for the course of action which will produce the best results over the long term.
48. They finish what they start. While so many spend their life starting things that they never finish, successful people get the job done – even when the excitement and the novelty have worn off. Even when it isn’t fun.
49. They are multi-dimensional, amazing, wonderful complex creatures (as we all are). They realize that not only are they physical and psychological beings, but emotional and spiritual creatures as well. They consciously work at being healthy and productive on all levels.
50. They practice what they preach. They don’t talk about the theory, they live the reality.
Which of these do you see in yourself? Which of these do you need to work on? Remember, success doesn't just happen. You create it by your ACTION. Leadership NOW!

May Is Mother's Month
May is Mother's Month at ATA Martial Arts. In addition to being able to train in any Taekwondo class or ATA FIT class for FREE this month, additional classes were held. We hosted a mom's only self defense training seminar. A lot of fun was had as we worked on strikes and breakaway techniques. Finally, kids had a good time showing mom some moves at our Mommy + Kid Martial Arts class. We look forward to seeing all the mom's continue their training at ATA Martial Arts. Great job, ladies!!

Mr. and Mrs. Jouan Have Goals Too
In addition to making ATA West Chester a successful school, Mr. and Mrs. Jouan have been training in martial arts for many, many years and this June look forward to taking the next step on their journey.
Mrs. Jouan will be eligible in June to test for her 5th degree black belt. She recently has completed all of her midterm testings and continues to seek knowledge wherever and whenever she can. In addition to taking courses and seminars at ATA World, National, and Regional events, Mrs. Jouan is training with top ATA Masters, including her instructor, Master Doug Stewart.
Mr. Jouan will be eligible to test for his 6th degree black belt in June. This is a journey that is almost 25 years in the making. Mr. Jouan completed his last midterm testing and has been receiving top scores. He has enjoyed training more with the new black belts at ATA West Chester. Seeing them push to be the best has inspired him to train harder right alongside them.
Both of them have received permission and will be testing on Friday, June 24th, 2011 at ATA International High Rank Testing in Little Rock, Arkansas. More information about World Championships may be found here:
http://www.ataonline.com/events/w2011/
Start making plans now to be at testing and competition, as well as the historic Inaugural Ceremony on Saturday night featuring Team Competition, Masters Ceremony, and the new Grand Master's Inauguration.

Black Belt Testing
February 18, 2011 marked the very first ever class of 1st Degree Decided Black Belts at ATA West Chester. Special guest, 6th Degree Black Belt, Master Doug Stewart came to oversee the event. It was a stressful evening but everyone performed well under pressure. Students testing for their black belts performed their forms, sparring, and board breaking. We even had our first ever 2nd Degree Black Belt midterm testings by Mrs. Gladson and Ms. Curry. Directly after testing, students were presented with their new ranks in the first ever black belt candle light ceremony (pictured left). A great job was done by all. We look forward now as you begin to plant seeds for the future and work hard on your journey towards second degree and beyond.

2nd Anniversary Party
Saturday, January 8, 2011.
ATA Martial Arts held its 2nd Annual Anniversary Party. The evening consisted of a catered dinner by Brothers as well as lots of delicious food brought in by some of the ATA families. Over 100 people attended despite the snowy conditions outside. We watched a slide show of the 2010 Year in Review. Also we drew the winner of our months long membership drive. The grand prize of a limited edition ATA Flip Cam went to Steven Scherzer. Way to go, Steven! We look forward to seeing everyone training hard throughout 2011 and we thank you for sharing ATA with your friends.

Sparring Seminar with Master Chewning
January 7, 2011, Master Chewning came to work with the students of ATA West Chester. He taught the first ever XMA Creative class. The 20 students in class learned all about the awesome XMA experience including combos, wushu butterfly kicks, and had a great time learning from an XMA World Champ.
Right after XMA class, Master Chewning taught a special sparring seminar. 35 students received Master Chewning's World Champ knowledge of free sparring. The insight helped them develop combos that will help them win in the ring in the next tournament. Everyone was tired and worked really hard, but came out with more confidence in their 'Champion' skills! Thanks Master Chewning
(Sorry about the blurry picture. Everyone was moving too fast!)
